Barrett calls for action to tackle consumer debt
John Barrett, Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today used a parliamentary debate on consumer debt, to call for better protection of the vulnerable.
John Barrett MP said:
"Some of my most vulnerable constituents are victims of unscrupulous sales tactics by certain credit companies, who continually make available high levels of credit to those least able to pay the money back.
"This includes television advertising which can mislead those already in debt into believing that by telephone a single number, they can consolidate their debt and pay back less. While this may result in lower monthly payments, the overall amount needing repaid can often be greater.
"These practices lead organisations like the Citizen's Advice Bureau having to deal with ever increasing number of people suffering from high consumer debt. When I visited one of the CAB offices in Pilton in my own constituency, I saw first hand the large number of cases they have to deal with and am always impressed by their commitment and professionalism.
"However, any action the Government can take to bring down the numbers getting into debt in the first place can only be a positive step forward."
