Barrett and Smith visit Edinburgh’s emergency fire services
Edinburgh West parliamentarians, John Barrett MP and Margaret Smith MSP, have visited the headquarters of Edinburgh's emergency fire cover.
The move follows a number of fires in their
Edinburgh West constituency which have required the action
of military personnel and green goddess fire engines.
Mr Barrett and Mrs Smith visited the police headquarters in
Fettes, where the emergency fire cover for Edinburgh and The
Borders is being coordinated during the 8-day strike by UK
fire-fighters.
Edinburgh West MP, John Barrett said:
"Those in charge of emergency fire cover in Edinburgh told us how they have already attended a number of fires, including one in Muirhouse in my constituency. The professionalism and commitment by the armed forces have undoubtedly saved lives in the capital city.
"The longer this strike goes on, the more and more the blame seems to lie at the Westminster Government's door. Rather than helping to find a resolution to the dispute, the Government has appeared to be a major blockade, giving out mixed messages over their willingness to back the deal struck between the FBU and fire employers last week.
"While there is a need to reform the fire service, there is also a clear need for transitional funding to be available from the Government to allow such modernisation to take place."
Margaret Smith MSP added:
"Although the service being provided by our armed forces is not on the same level as one would expect under normal circumstances, I was comforted to see the level of cover which is still being provided. With limited equipment available, it is clear the military are doing an excellent job under what are very difficult circumstances.
"Having said that, it remains critical
for my constituents and people throughout Edinburgh, to remain
especially vigilant during the strikes to minimise the potential
for fires."
