JOHN BARRETT ON STEPHEN BYERS' RESIGNATION
John Barrett MP, the Scottish Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Cross Border Transport, today welcomed the resignation of Transport Secretary, Stephen Byers and called on the Government to focus on delivering an integrated transport system.
John Barrett MP said:
"It was clear that Stephen Byers position in the Government was untenable, having lost of the trust of Parliament, the trust of commuters and the trust of the country.
"This drawn out saga involving the Transport Secretary has only served to damage the confidence of the travelling public. However, sorting out the mess is not about personalities, it is about policies. The Government must use this resignation for a fresh start and focus on improving this country's transport network.
"In Scotland, we need massive investment in our railways, improving services, cutting fare costs and increasing safety standards. We need to press head with the building of the air traffic control centre at Prestwick following deep concerns over safety in the sector. There is much that this Government needs to do, now is the time to get on with it."
