Two weeks left to claim backdated Child Tax Credit warns Barrett

John Barrett, Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today warned his constituents and people across Edinburgh that they now have less than two weeks to apply for the new Child Tax Credit or face losing money to which they are entitled.

Nine out of ten families are estimated to be eligible for the Government's new tax credit.  Eligible families will be entitled to at least £545 a year with more money for those on lower wages or families with a number of dependant children. However, only successful applications submitted before the 6th July will be backdated to April of this year.

In a statement, John Barrett said:

"It is estimated that 430,000 families in Scotland are eligible for the child tax credit.  However, the deadline for applications, which will allow for all backdated money being paid, is now fast approaching.

"There have been many reports showing the system at the Inland Revenue to be in chaos. As I said in Parliament two weeks ago, there are some families in my constituency who are still waiting to hear if they have qualified, months after making their original claim.

"These events risk putting many people off claiming the money altogether.  However, it is important that everyone who believes they could be eligible for the credit make a claim.

"My message to families in my own constituency and across Edinburgh is: If you have not yet claimed - do so now.  The Revenue will only backdate claims by three months, so the latest you can submit your form is 6th July or you will start to lose money."
