Barrett seeks quick resolution to Pilton Post Office probe

John Barrett MP, Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today called for a speedy resolution to the current investigation into fraud allegations at West Pilton Post Office in his constituency.

The investigations being carried out by the Benefits Agency have resulted in the current closure of the post office, leaving local people, including pensioners, with a longer distance to travel to collect such items as pensions and giros.

Mr Barrett has now tabled a series of parliamentary questions to the Secretary of State for Work & Pensions, to ask for details of the enquiry now being undertaken.

In a statement, John Barrett MP said:

"While it is important the enquiry is a thorough one, I would hope that a speedy resolution to the issue can be reached.

"Post Offices, like the one in West Pilton, are often the centre of local communities where local people, especially older people, can meet and pass the time of day. Aside from obvious service inconveniences, the closure of local post offices can have a major impact on the wider community.

"I have already spoken to a number of local residents and there is great deal of confusion in the West Pilton area. I will be writing to Consignia to stress to them the importance of properly informing residents about the status of the post office and to publicise the alternative services available.

"However, at the centre of this is a serious question-mark hanging over the operation of the post office. Local people deserve answers when currently, there are only questions. I will therefore be pressing the Department of Work & Pensions for further details of the enquiry currently ongoing."
