Lib Dem MP in Forth Bridge charity abseil
John Barrett, Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today confirmed that he would be raising money for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland by taking part in a sponsored abseil off the Forth Rail Bridge in his constituency.
The abseil is being supported by Network Rail and will involve a number of people completing a freefall 'SAS style' leap off the Rail Bridge. It is the first time such an event has ever taken place off the famous Scottish landmark.
In a statement, John Barrett MP said:
"Coronary heart disease is one of the biggest killers in Scotland and strokes are the main causes of disability, with over 100,000 affected. That is why the work of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland is so important.
"Thankfully, many of my constituents as well as other MPs in Parliament have already been very generous with their contributions. Hopefully, this effort, involving a number of people, will be able to raise a great deal of money for this excellent charity.
"Former Liberal Democrat leader, Paddy Ashdown was well known for his SAS background and for his experience in military style activities like this. However, I have assured Charles Kennedy that, contrary to some speculation, this is not the start of my party leadership bid!"
