Edinburgh’s share of lottery cash falling – Barrett
John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh
West, today released new figures, which showedEdinburgh's
share
of lottery
cash significantly down on last year.
Information obtained by Mr Barrett's office from the Department
for Culture, Media and Sport, showed that in the first six
months of 2004, the City of Edinburgh received just 1.6%
of lottery money. This compares to a 2.4% share over
the whole of 2003.
190 lottery awards have now been made toEdinburghbased projects
since the beginning of this year. At the current rate,
the Capital will only get two thirds of the number of lottery
awards this year compared with 2003.
In a statement, John Barrett MP said:
"With the national lottery celebrating its 10 year anniversary
this year, it would be a great shame ifEdinburghwas not getting
its fair share of money for good causes.
"To be fair, the lottery distributing bodies can only respond
to claims made. That is why it is so important for
City organisations, not just big projects but small community
groups, to apply for funding.
"Some groups never think about applying for lottery money. Others
have perhaps applied but have been turned down. However,
the 'Awards for All' scheme, which administers lottery money
to smaller groups, has produced new guidelines on how to
give your application a better chance of being approved.
"If more local groups apply, we can hopefully getEdinburgh's
share of lottery money back to where it should be by the
end of the year."
