Barrett raises awareness in run up to World TB Day

A new exhibition raising awareness of TB sufferers around the world will be officially opened this evening (Tuesday 7th March) in the House of Commons. The exhibition is jointly hosted by John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West and RESULTS, a grassroots advocacy organisation.

The exhibition features work from renowned TB photographer Gary Hampton and focuses on the plight of TB sufferers throughout the world and on what action is necessary to tackle the disease. The exhibition is designed to raise awareness of the struggle against TB in the run up to World TB day on the 24th March.

In a statement, John Barrett, a member of the International Development Select Committee said:

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to do my bit to help raise awareness of the plight of TB sufferers across the world. It is simply intolerable that 5000 people still die from TB every day despite it being both preventable and curable.

“We often think of TB as a disease of the past, affecting only the poorest countries. This exhibition is designed to remind people that TB is current, serious and is actually on the rise in many countries including the UK.

“Edinburgh’s own TB pioneer Sir John Crofton demonstrated more than 50 years ago that TB is curable. With a complete course of drugs costing less than £10 per patient, the international community can have no excuses for inaction.

“With the incidence of TB again on the increase, it is more crucial than ever that this issue does not slip off the political agenda. This exhibition is designed to help raise the profile of the battle against TB in the run up to world TB day on March 24th.”

Sheila Davie, National Director of RESULTS UK said:

“Parliamentarians have a unique and crucial role to play in the fight against TB. After participating in two delegations organised by RESULTS to high TB-burden countries and personally witnessing first-hand the impact of this often neglected disease, John was inspired to contact photographer Gary Hampton and begin arranging this exhibition.

“This exhibition will provide an opportunity to engage even more MPs with the issue of tuberculosis. I hope that greater awareness of the TB epidemic and the actions needed to eradicate it will help influence the UK Government to make fighting TB a greater political priority and to increase its funding for global TB control.”
