Barrett demands answers over rendition flights

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today demanded real answers from the Government after it was confirmed that US planes suspected of secretly carrying terrorist suspects have been using Scottish airports.

The Ministry of Defence toady finally confirmed the use of British Military airfields by American aircraft suspected of involvement in extraordinary rendition.

The admission provides the first official evidence that aircraft landing at UK airports had origins and destinations including Libya, Pakistan, Qatar, Malta, Morocco and the United States. Glasgow was among those destinations listed. (See notes.)

In a statement John Barrett said:

“It is high time the UK Government came clean on rendition flights. Understandably many of my constituents are extremely concerned at the possibility that the UK may be condoning kidnapping and torture.

“What the US government call rendition, others could call kidnapping. This practice cannot be allowed to continue. If Scottish airports have been used for rendition then people deserve to know.

“After months of uncertainty, we now need clear answers. Our government’s position of "hear no evil, see no evil" is simply unacceptable.
“ It is high time the Government asks the US Administration some straightforward questions so we can finally get to the truth on this matter.”

Notes

The following information was provided after the Liberal Democrats threatened to take the matter to the Parliamentary Ombudsman if the Government did not give the details about three planes which have featured in newspaper claims.
