Holocaust memorial more relevant than ever

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West and Member of the International Development Select Committee, today called on the international Community to strengthen its resolve to protect and defend human rights.

On this day in 1945 the Red Army liberated Auschwitz and exposed Nazi brutality to the world. Today marks the first ever international Holocaust day.

John Barrett said:

"The Holocaust was a catastrophe for mankind. Its victims must never be forgotten. Today’s commemoration is not only a memorial to their lives but represents a shared determination to fight racism, intolerance and evil, wherever it is found.

"We must acknowledge, understand and remember the crimes of the past, I order to protect future generations. Holocaust Memorial Day offers us the opportunity to reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust, and to learn the lessons of the past.

"We must not forget that even today there are those who suffer from the gravest atrocities, as recent events in Rwanda and Darfur bear witness. It is incumbent on us all to strengthen our resolve to prevent such crimes, and to defend and protect universal human rights."
