Barrett joins UNICEF in fight to protect the world’s ‘invisible’ children

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, has today launched a parliamentary motion commending a new groundbreaking report by UNICEF on the plight of Children throughout the World.

Mr Barrett launched the motion following today’s publication of The State of the World’s Children, UNICEF’s flagship publication. It is the most comprehensive survey of global trends affecting children.

The report highlights the fact that Millions of children every year disappear from view when trafficked or forced to work in domestic servitude. Other children, such as street children, live in plain sight but are excluded from fundamental services and protections.

In a statement, John Barrett said:

“Often in the midst of poverty, it is the children who are forgotten. Not only do these children endure abuse, but most are shut out from school, healthcare and all the other vital services children need to grow and thrive.

“Meeting the Millennium Development Goals depends on reaching out o these vulnerable children throughout the developing world. We in the international community must do more to help these most vulnerable of children.

“I know from my own experience that the public can always be relied upon for their generosity in responding to the plight of children throughout the world. However it is world leaders who now need to take the lead on this issue.

“The UNICEF report highlights what the international community need to do to get to grips with this issue. I hope that the report, along with my motion will help spur world leaders and policy-makers into action.”
