Barrett backs fairer tax pledge

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West today called for ‘fairer taxes across the board’.

New tax plan launched today will see tax cuts for millions of people, paid for by closing tax loopholes, making polluters pay and introducing a ‘mansion tax’ on homes worth over £2m.

Speaking after the launch of the new tax proposals, John Barrett said:

“Today’s proposals would deliver fairer taxes across the board after a decade of stealth taxes. Across Edinburgh people realise that the taxation system has become more about scoring political points than about delivering a fair system where everyone contributes their share.

“The current tax regime forces some of the lowest earners to pay taxes they can’t afford while the opposition's only answer is an inheritance tax giveaway to the richest people in the country.

“It is right to ask those with the broadest shoulders to bear a little more of the burden so that millions of people on normal earnings get the break they desperately need.”
