Barrett calls for immediate end to Gaza blockade

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West today called for an immediate end to the blockade of Gaza so that much needed food and medical supplies can get through to Palestinians living in poverty.

The head of the UN agency helping Palestinian refugees have reported that the number of Gazans living in “abject” poverty has tripled this year to 300,000.

Mr Barrett has tabled a Commons motion calling for the Government to increase the pressure on the Israeli Government to open the borders to Gaza for humanitarian aid.

Speaking from Westminster, John Barrett said:

“When one in five Palestinians in Gaza are living in intolerable conditions it is simply unacceptable that the Israeli government is continuing to refuse to lift the blockade or allow access for humanitarian relief.

“Political disagreements between the Israelis and the Palestinians are no excuse for allowing a humanitarian disaster to unfold in Gaza. It is time for the British Government to take a far tougher line with the Israelis to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.”

Notes

John Barrett has tabled the following Early Day Motion

That this House condemns the continued illegal blockade of Palestinian Gaza territory by Israel; notes that the blockade causes immense pain and suffering to Palestinians in Gaza; is further concerned that medical and food supplies are not getting into Gaza; notes that the Israel military forcibly boarded an aid ship while in international waters, in violation of numerous international laws; praises the work Free Gaza Movement ships Dignity and the Spirit of Humanity, which bring in much needed humanitarian assistance; and asks that the Government use all available diplomatic channels to end the blockade.
