Edinburgh must not miss out on high speed future

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West today warned that Edinburgh must not be cut out of any High Speed Rail link linking Scotland to London.

The Edinburgh West MP’s comments came after Network Rail proposed a £34bn high-speed line linking Glasgow to London in 2030 in two hours and 16 minutes. The West coast line will run via Birmingham and Manchester.

Mr Barrett has called on the Scottish Government to commit to a high speed link between Edinburgh and Glasgow to be constructed at the same time to link Edinburgh into the network.

John Barrett said:

“As a long-time supporter of a high-speed rail link I am delighted that these proposals are being seriously considered.

“It is time for the Scottish Government to match this ambition and commit to an Edinburgh-to-Glasgow high-speed line that would link both cities into the new national high speed network.

“High speed rail could deliver tremendous benefits to the city but it will need the government in Holyrood to ensure that Edinburgh is not left behind.”
