Barrett salutes Armed Forces Day

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today paid tribute to the men and woman who serve in Britain’s armed forces at the end of a week celebrating the role they play in preserving a free and safe society.

Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June marks the culmination of events held across the United Kingdom to honour Britain’s armed forces, past, present and future.

John Barrett said:

“Scotland’s service men and women have a tremendously distinguished history and continue to play a vital part in Britain’s operations around the world.

“We must never forget the sacrifices that they have made and the huge risks that they take on a daily basis on our behalf. Armed Forces Day provides an opportunity to show our appreciation, as well as to reflect on how we can better support them.

“It is vital that the Scottish Government and MoD work much more closely together to support our troops and veterans. There is a great deal to be done to ensure there is adequate provision of mental and physical health care, decent housing and effective skills training, both for serving troops and those returning to civilian life.”
