Iraq inquiry must be fully transparent

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West today warned that any inquiry into the war in Iraq must be fully transparent or it would not be accepted by the public.

Gordon Brown will announce this week that an inquiry is to be held into the Iraq war.

Mr Barrett said:

“The invasion of Iraq was the most calamitous foreign policy decision since Suez. The idea that we can best learn the lessons of Iraq by holding secret hearings in Whitehall is absurd.

“Whether measured in terms of lives, money or our security the cost of the war in Iraq has been far too high. A full independent inquiry held in public is the very least that our soldiers and their families deserve.

“The country owes it to every soldier who has risked their life in Iraq to learn the lessons of the invasion. We need a full and frank inquiry so that we can make sure we do not repeat the mistakes of the past.”
