Barrett presses Government on small business support

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West today warned that viable businesses in Edinburgh were facing closure because of a lack of support by the banking industry.

Speaking during Treasury Questions, Mr Barrett called on the Government to make sure that the billions of pounds of public money invested in the banking industry finds its way to support businesses during the recession.

Mr Barrett said:

“For many of the businesses I am speaking to, the biggest challenge they face is not a downturn in business, but from sudden changes to lending criteria and other conditions at their bank.

“At a time when businesses are navigating their way through a recession, they need support from the banking industry, particularly when we have invested billions of pounds of public money to keep many banks afloat.

“The Government needs to do a far better job of ensuring that the public money invested in the banks is made available to support small businesses and create the jobs that will see us out of the current recession.”
