Barrett calls for fairness for Gurkhas

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today called on the Government to grant Gurkhas the legal right to live in the UK and gain citizenship status.

The Liberal Democrats at Westminster have secured a debate on the plight of the 200,000 Gurkhas who fought on behalf of the British in the two world wars.

Gurkhas are still denied the legal right to live in this country and are excluded from becoming UK citizens. The Government have continually refused to accept the judgment of the High Court and give all ex-Gurkhas the right to settle in the UK.

John Barrett said:

“Considering the tremendous bravery of Gurkhas, hundreds of thousands of whom have fought and risked their lives on our behalf all around the world, it is shameful that they have received no gratitude from this country.

“These soldiers, who have worked risked their lives on behalf of the British people, deserve at least the right to live in the country they have served so well.”
