Prime Minister and Chancellor should end housing claims immediately

End London accommodation allowance for all MPs living within commuting distance of Westminster and for Ministers with grace and favour homes immediately, demands John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West.

Speaking at a public meeting in his constituency, where MPs’ expenses were the major topic under discussion, John Barrett added:

“There is no reason why Ministers with grace and favour homes in London, or MPs who live within commuting distance of Westminster, should receive any London accommodation allowance.

“It is unacceptable that the top elected politicians in the UK, including the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer, should have bills for constituency homes in Scotland paid, while they live in homes in Downing Street provided by the tax-payers. The London accommodation allowance is there to pay the extra costs incurred while staying in London to do the job. If a grace and favour home is provided, then there is no extra cost.

“The Prime Minister and Chancellor should provide a lead and stop claiming this allowance immediately. It is clearly wrong and to say that is within the rules is no excuse.”
