Barrett calls for Israel arms embargo

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West today, called for the Government to suspend all arms exports to Israel over concerns that illegal weaponry was used during the recent conflict in Gaza.

A new report from Amnesty International has detailed the use of illegal weapons such as white phosphorus artillery shells and metal cube shrapnel during the recent conflict in Gaza.

Speaking during questions to the Foreign Secretary at Westminster, Mr Barrett pressed for an arms embargo on Israel as well as armed Palestinian groups.

John Barrett said:

“In light of the illegal use of white phosphorus shells in Gaza it is clearly time for a suspension of arms exports to Israel.”

“The Government’s own figures show Britain is selling more and more weapons to Israel every year. In 2007, the Government approved £6m of arms exports. In 2008, it licensed £20m in the first three months alone.

“Resolving the political situation in Gaza will be much harder if we continue to flood the region with weapons. It is time for the UK to lead the way on this issue and prevent UK-made arms fuelling conflict in the Middle East.”
