Eight Scots unemployed for every vacancy

Commenting on today’s figures which show unemployment in Scotland rose by 11,000 over the last quarter to 137,000,  John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West said:

“Whichever way the Government spins these figures, there are still almost eight unemployed people for each vacancy advertised in Scottish job centres

“Hot on the heels of the 2,300 job losses at the Royal Bank of Scotland, this is devastating news for people who find themselves unemployed in the current recession.

“For those people looking looking for work they need action from the Government rather than yet more media friendly initiatives. Ministers must scrap their ineffective VAT cut immediately and reinvest the money in infrastructure projects to create jobs.”

Notes

A Parliamentary Answer given to David Laws MP gives a breakdown of the 271,000 advertised vacancies recorded by Jobcentres across the UK.

There are 17,607 advertised vacancies in Scotland, but the number of people out of work in Scotland has increased to 137,000.  This makes a ratio of 7.8 to 1.
