Barrett calls for ambition to deliver high speed rail
John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West today called on the Government to commit to a high speed rail link between Edinburgh and the South of England.
Speaking during Transport Questions at Westminster, the Edinburgh West MP called for the government to look again at high speed rail as an alternative to environmentally damaging short-haul flights.
Experts say a 200mph high-speed rail link of the kind operating in many other countries, would cut journey times from London to Edinburgh to just two-and-a-half-hours.
John Barrett said:
“High speed rail offers a far less polluting alternative to short haul aviation. All that is lacking is the political will and ambition from Government to deliver.
“Committing to a major new project such as high speed rail would also create thousands of jobs in construction and engineering – some of the area hardest hit by recent rises in unemployment.
“Moving passengers from air to rail would cut down on air pollution while freeing up capacity at Edinburgh airport for the long haul flights to America, the far East and elsewhere that benefit the City and Scotland.
