Barrett calls for Government action to help pensioners hit by inflation pinch
John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh today called on the Government to do more to help pensioners struggling with the rising cost of living after figures showed that pensioners face a higher rate of inflation than anyone else.
Research released today [Thursday] by the IFS has revealed that the oldest, poorest pensioner households now have an average inflation rate of 9% compared to 5.4% for non-pensioners.
John Barrett said:
“These figures confirm what we suspected all along, that pensioners are increasingly struggling to make ends meet under this Government.
“Pensioners are falling further and further behind the rest of the population, hit hardest by rising fuel and food costs.
“This year’s sharp rise in pensioner poverty will not be a one-off unless ministers increase the state pension and ensure more people claim the pension credit to which they are entitled.”
