New ID card design will not sell scheme to the public

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today hit out at the Government’s proposed identity cards scheme following the unveiling of the design for the controversial cards.

The new identity cards will be introduced across the UK from November this year.

John Barrett said:

“The new ID card design will not sell this scheme to the public. Given the Government’s shocking record on protecting the public’s personal data, I find it incredible that they are proceeding with this scheme - and risk stigmatising those more vulnerable members of society in the process.

“At a time when everyone has to tighten their belts, it makes no sense for Ministers to press ahead with a scheme that is so ruinously expensive and yet will be so ineffective at clamping down on terrorism, illegal immigration or identity fraud.

“This is a classic example of the Government spending money that could be better spent elsewhere or given back to the taxpayer.”
