Barrett launches moves in Parliament to honour Armed Forces ahead of Veterans Day 2008

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today (26th June) launched a parliamentary motion commending the bravery of armed forces veterans ahead of Veterans Day 2008 which takes place tomorrow (Friday 27th June).

The Edinburgh West MP has tabled a motion in Parliament highlighting the contribution made by veterans and calling on the Government to honour the Military Covenant to ensure dignity and respect for veterans and their families.

John Barrett said:

Veterans Day is both a celebration of the contribution made by all those who have served in the armed forces, and a fitting way to raise public awareness of veterans issues such as the importance of honouring the Military Covenant.

As well as showing our respect to veterans on Veterans Day, while our armed forces are engaged overseas, it is important that we continue to educate the next generation about the sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed forces.

Veterans Day can help remind us all of the bravery of our service personnel and the sacrifices that they have, and continue to make on our behalf.

The Edinburgh West MP also took the opportunity to encourage all eligible veterans to apply for a Veterans Badge following a further extension of the eligibility criteria. The badge is now available to all men and women who have served in the armed forces at any time. It is estimated that many veterans newly eligible have either yet to apply, or are unaware of the extension.

John Barrett added:

The badge represents a token of appreciation for the ex-service men and women who have been prepared to lay down their lives to protect this country. I would urge any constituents who think they may be eligible for the badge to contact my Drum Brae constituency office on 0131 339 0339 to receive an application form.
