Barrett speaks up on Trident

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today called for the Government to scrap plans to replace Trident, the UK’s independent nuclear deterrent.

Mr Barrett was addressing a rally of over 2,000 people in Edinburgh campaigning against the renewal of Trident.

Speaking at the rally, John Barrett said:

“When people march en masse, politicians have a moral duty to listen to what they have to say. I have had letters, phone calls and countless emails from constituents letting me know about their opposition to Trident. To this day, I have yet to receive a single letter supporting replacement.

“Our generation faces 2 key threats that we must overcome; global poverty and climate change. It is obvious to everyone here today that Nuclear weapons are useless against both.

“At a time when we hear weekly reports about our poorly equipped soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan how can we in good conscience spend billions on pounds on Trident. I would rather back our troops than back weapons of mass destruction.

“We have enough real problems to concentrate on without spending billion of pounds on a weapon that we simply do not need, that deters a threat that does not exist.

“If we in the UK renew our nuclear weapons, what possible moral justification do we have to say to others, such as North Korea and Iran that they are not entitled to pursue their own nuclear weapons programmes.”
