IT failure final nail in the coffin for ID cards

Responding to the Chancellor’s statement on the loss by the Child Benefit agencies of 7 million families’ personal and financial details, Edinburgh West Liberal Democrat MP said:

“This is an enormous breach of security and will severely dent public confidence in HMRC. For constituents of mine who are receiving Child Support payments these developments are hugely concerning and we need urgent safeguards introduced to ensure that this cannot happen again.

“For those claiming Child Support Payments, this is just the last in a long list of administrative incompetence and operational mistakes.

“This must be the final nail in the coffin for the Identity Cards scheme. If data already held by Government can be handled in such a criminally irresponsible manner then how can the public have any confidence in entrusting yet more personal details to Government agencies.”
