Action needed on TB

John is currently in Kenya meeting with Dr Chakaya, National Tuberculosis (TB) Programme Manager and Simon Bland head of the Dept of International Development office in Kenya as well as visiting health centres in the slums of Nairobi and clinics out in more remote areas. John is seeing first hand the work that is required to combat TB which kills over 2 million people every year. Due to a combination of economic decline, the breakdown of health systems and the emergence of multi-drug resistant TB the disease is now on the rise in many developing countries. Recently TB rates have also begun to rise in the UK and other European countries.

John is leading calls for the UK Government, which is hosting a meeting to discuss the replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria on 5th and 6th of September, to take the lead on this issue and encourage other donors to address funding needs for 2006 and 2007, as well as dealing with this years anticipated shortfall.
