Barrett issues warning to Government over Edinburgh Post Offices

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today warned Government Ministers that any planned Post Office closures in the West of Edinburgh would be vigorously opposed by local politicians and communities.

Mr Barrett made the call after the Governments announced details of the first 180 post offices to be closed. Earlier this year Ministers published plans to press ahead with a programme for 2,500 Post Office closures across the country. Details of further closures are expected to be announced next year.

John Barrett, who has campaigned locally against local post office closures for many years said:

“These closures are completely unnecessary. It is obvious that there are ways of sustaining post offices without breaking the bank. What’s missing is the Government’s willingness to do so.

“It is the Government themselves who have put post offices in this difficult position. Instead of supporting them they have continued to strip away business from them - such as the TV licence - and what is more they are now exploiting these problems to justify the closures.

“Once again vital social services are being lost to communities for the sake of money and because of an assessment process that takes little account of the effects of the changes being made. I can assure Gordon Brown that any planned closures in my constituency will be vigorously opposed by myself and local communities who depend on the services they provide.”
