Barrett launches bid for veterans event after massive response to badge appeal

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today launched a fresh appeal for veterans across Edinburgh to claim their HM Armed Forces Veteran’s Badge after eligibility was extended for a second time in as many years.

The badge is now available to all men and women who served in the armed forces up until 31 December 1984. However, it is estimated that many veterans now eligible have either yet to apply, or are unaware of the extension.

An appeal earlier this year by Mr Barrett has already attracted hundreds of responses from veterans across the city. the Edinburgh West MP is urging any constituents of his who think they may be eligible for the badge to contact his drum brae constituency office on 0131 339 0339 to receive an application form.

Mr Barrett has also written to new Lord Provost, George Grubb to discuss plans for an event to mark the official Veterans Day on the 27th June 2007.

Vetrans with John Barrett

John Barrett said:

“The badge represents a token of appreciation for the ex-service men and women who have been prepared to lay down their lives to protect this country. With Veterans Day fast approaching I am trying to encourage everyone who served in the armed forces to claim their Veteran’s Badge from the Ministry of Defence.

“The appeal so far has been massively successful with hundreds of constituents contacting my office for an application form. It seems that many veterans were previously unaware that they were even eligible for the badge, let alone how to go about claiming it.

“Now that the eligibility has been extended once again I hope that many more people will get in touch. Anyone who wants information or assistance in claiming their Veteran’s Badge should contact my office on 0131 339 0339. They will be sent an application form along with instructions on how to go about claiming their badge.”

“As well as showing our respect to veterans, while our armed forces are engaged overseas, it is important that we continue to educate the next generation about the sacrifices that continue to be made by the men and women of the armed forces. I will be working hard to ensure that veterans in my constituency continue to have a strong voice in Westminster ahead of Veterans day later this month (June 07).”
