Climate change bill needs real year on year targets
Commenting on the Government’s launch of the draft climate change bill,
John Barrett said:
"While this is a step forward, many people will rightly say that we have heard this rhetoric from the Government before and they have failed to follow through.
"What we need are real year on year targets for our emissions. Climate change is the greatest long-term threat we face – there can be no excuses from the Government on this count.
Mr Barrett, who recently launched a bill to phase out wasteful incandescent light bulbs, today announced he would be writing to David Milliband to press for similar proposals to be included in the Bill.
Mr Barrett continued:
"The energy savings we would achieve through a switch to more energy efficient lighting are massive. Phasing out the most wasteful light bulbs is just one example of the kind of measures that the Government should be bringing forward as part of this bill. Climate change is a global problem and it requires action at all levels of society. I hope that we will see a Bill that reflects this."
