Barrett calls for fairer, greener budget from Brown

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today called on Gordon Brown to focus on pensioners, benefits and the environment ahead of tomorrows budget.

John Barrett said:

“In what is likely to be Gordon Brown’s last Budget as Chancellor, I want to see a Budget that is fair for all Scottish people.

“In his pre-budget statement in November, I was disappointed by Mr Brown’s refusal to offer further assistance to pensioners with winter fuel bills. It is now time to urgently restore the earnings link to pensions to give pensioners a fairer deal.

“We need a budget which brings forward proposals to simplify our needlessly complex benefits system so that people receive benefits on the basis of need, not on how good they are at filling out forms.

“I also want to see real measures to get to grips with climate change and global warming, including greener and fairer taxes – not simply higher taxes.”
