Barrett leading support for national ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, is leading support in parliament for Fairtrade Fortnight 2007 which kicks off today.

Mr Barrett has backed a motion in parliament backing the campaign. Fairtrade Fortnight runs from the 26th February until the 11th March.

In a statement, John Barrett, who was recently promoted to Liberal Democrat spokesman on international development said:

“I am delighted that Edinburgh has been named a Fairtrade city for the third year in a row. We now need to encourage other towns and cities across the country to follow our good example.

“Buying Fairtrade really does make a difference. People know when they are buying Fairtrade goods that they are putting money directly into the pockets of those who need our help.

“After the disappointment of the latest round of world trade talks, it is crucial that we do not allow this issue to slip off the agenda.”
