Barrett to take Post Office concerns to DTI Minister

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today announced he is to take the concerns of local sub-postmasters to the top, at a meeting with Post Offices minister Jim Fitzpatrick next week (Tuesday 5th).

Mr Barrett will join other Scottish Liberal Democrat MPs to quiz Ministers ahead of a crucial Parliamentary Statement on the future of the Post Office Network, expected to be delivered by Alistair Darling to the House of Commons within the next few weeks.

The Liberal Democrat MP recently launched a constituency-wide survey of sub-postmasters asking for their views ahead of next weeks meeting.

Mr Barrett will press the Government to review its decision to scrap the post office card account. Currently, the average Post Office receives around 10% of its income through the car account scheme. The Government plan to withdraw the card account by 2010.

John Barrett said:

“I have already received comments from a number of Post Offices in my constituency who are increasingly concerned about the viability of their businesses. The simple fact is that successive Government decisions are forcing Post Offices out of business.

“Policy decisions, such as the scrapping of the Post Office Card Account and the loss of the TV license service have hit many Post Offices hard. Since I was elected to Westminster, I have seen Labour close almost 20 local post offices across Edinburgh, despite widespread public resistance.

“With over 30,000 people across Edinburgh depending on the Post Office card Account to access benefits, there can be no doubt that scrapping the system will have a major impact on the long term viability of many local Post Offices.

“I look forward to putting across the view of sub-postmasters in my constituency. Post Offices provide a vital service often acting as a focal point for local communities. We cannot afford to let this Government allow the network to wither on the vine.”
