Barrett calls for international action on Global Day for Darfur

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today called for the international community to take immediate action on the crisis in Darfur.

Today people around the world are taking part in the Global Day for Darfur to show world-wide support for the people of Darfur and to put pressure on the international community to do more to protect civilians.

Despite the signing of a peace agreement on 5 May 2006, the violence in Darfur has not stopped while in some parts of the region the fighting has intensified.

Mr Barrett, who is a member of the International Development Select Committee was due to visit Darfur earlier this month as part of a delegation of politicians, however the trip was cancelled by the government because of the worsening security situation.

John Barrett said:

“I wholeheartedly welcome today’s international day of action for Darfur. The already desperate humanitarian situation in the region is worsening by the day. The Sudanese Government is failing to protect its citizens and the under-resourced African Union troops are unable to carry out their security commitments.

“Today’s events around the world must be a wake-up call for the international community to act decisively – we must not fail the people of Darfur as we failed the people of Rwanda nearly 12 years ago.”
