Barrett honoured by animal welfare group

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, has been appointed ‘honorary vice president’ of the Scottish SPCA in recognition of his work over many years fighting the cause of animal welfare.

Mr Barrett has worked alongside the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA) on a series of campaigns since 2001 including the fight to ban the import of cat and dog fur, action on animal snares, and the growing problem of airgun offences against animals.

John Barrett said:

“I am delighted to accept this great honour. The Scottish SPCA do a fantastic job fighting for animal welfare and it has been a privilege to work with them on a number of important issues over the years.

“The Scottish SPCA and I have worked closely together on a number of campaigns with great success. However, there is still much work still to be done to tackle animal cruelty in this country and further afield.

“Ghandi once said that you can judge a society’s moral progress by the way it treats its animals. If this is true, then many countries, including the UK still work to do. I for one will be doing my bit to keep the issue of animal welfare on the political agenda.”

Leonora Merry, the Scottish SPCA’s Parliamentary Officer said:

“We are delighted that John Barrett has accepted our invitation to become the Society’s Honorary Vice President. John has already demonstrated his real commitment to animal welfare and as the local MP for our Headquarters near Cramond in Edinburgh, John is ideally placed to represent the Society’s concerns in Westminster. This is a genuinely exciting day for the Scottish SPCA and for animal welfare.”
