We must never forget the sacrifices of our war veterans

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, today called on the Government to do more to support war veterans and ensure that their bravery and sacrifices are not forgotten.

Mr Barrett made the call during a Parliamentary debate on Government support for veterans. The debate follows Sunday’s remembrance services across the country marking 60 years since the end of World War II.

Speaking after the debate John Barrett said:

“Veterans have made a huge contribution to the history of our country, frequently giving their lives so that we can live ours in freedom. We must never forget the sacrifices of our soldiers and must pass on the culture of remembrance from generation to generation.

“I was shocked by a recent survey showing that 3⁄4 of our pupils did not know what VE day stood for, worryingly some thought it was a music festival and others a disease. It is clear that we need to do more to educate the younger generation about the bravery of our war veterans. The last century was the most violent in the history of mankind. It is up to us to educate this next generation so that they will be inspired to make this new century one of lasting peace and toleration.

“However, while we must remember Veterans from previous conflicts we should not forget those members of our armed forces that are, as we speak, serving this country in Iraq and elsewhere. We need to do more to take better care of these veterans and their families when they return from conflict. That means better training, better pensions and more help to ease their transition to civilian life.

“Clearly we all owe a debt of gratitude to our service men and women who have given so much to this country. It is up to all of us to make sure that we return thefavouras best we can.”
