Government should listen to its own advisors on nuclear power

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, has today given his full backing to a new report published today by the Government’s own advisory panel, the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC).

The report concludes that building new nuclear power plants is not the answer to tackling climate change or to securing Britain’s energy supply.

In a statement, John Barrett said:

“This report concludes that the risks of nuclear energy outweigh its advantages. I entirely agree – there is no easy fix to our climate change and energy crisis.

“There are huge problems associated with nuclear power, there is still no long-term solution for the storage of nuclear waste and the economics of nuclear uncertain at best.

“Safety is extremely important. The risks for future generations if we get it wrong could be disastrous.

“Scotland has huge potential in renewable energy sources. All it takes is the political will. I am determined to do everything I can to resist a new generation of nuclear power stations and to promote greater use of renewable energy.”
