What are the toughest challenges of the job?
There are many challenges in the job both at a local and national level. One of the most basic challenges is trying to convince the government that, even though they have a majority in Parliament, this does not mean that they are right all of the time.
At a more local level it can be very frustrating dealing with government departments which have clearly made mistakes, but simply refuse to admit it. I have lost count of the number of Tax Credit cases that have been as a result of an error from the department responsible for the case yet they will continue to deny this. Dealing with the Child Support Agency and mothers who have received no payments towards the support of children from ex partners can be very challenging.
Other challenges include keeping a global perspective on issues, when domestic problems can dominate the agenda.
On a more mundane level the challenge of commuting 400 miles each week can also be a problem.
