Veteran badge campaign

August 2007

Over the last 12 months the Government has twice extended the eligibility for veterans’ badges. The badges are now available to all men and women who served in the armed forces up until 31 December 1994, however many veterans now eligible have either yet to apply, or are unaware of the extension.

I have been working hard to make sure that as many veterans as possible across Edinburgh West are able to claim the award and have so far helped almost 400 veterans claim their badges. If you think you might be eligible and would like an application form please contact my constituency office and I will send you a form.

As well as the armed forces veterans' badge, Merchant Navy seafarers and fishermen who served in a vessel at a time when it was operated to facilitate military operations by UK Armed Forces at any time prior to 31 December 1969 are also now eligable for a Veteran's Badge. The Merchant Seafarers’ bravery and sacrifice in assisting HM Armed Forces in military operations has been formally commemorated with the launch of the new UK Merchant Seafarers Veteran’s Badge.

The Government recently announced that those conscripted to work down the mines during World War II, the Bevin Boys as they were known, will also receive a special honour to commemorate their contribution to the war effort. The application process for the Badge will be launched towards the end of the year and will be co-ordinated by the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA). With a view to the first Badge being awarded to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the demobilisation of the final Bevin Boys in March 2008.
