Benefits

Listed below are some of the benefits that can currently be claimed together with details of how to find out more information.

Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)

Designed for those who are actively looking for work, there are two types of JSA. The first type is called ‘contribution-based’ and is based on National Insurance contributions from the last two years. This is paid for up to 182 days. The second type is ‘income-based’ JSA and is based on income and savings. Ordinarily, JSA is available to those over the age of eighteen and under the State Pension age.

New Deal for disabled people

The New Deal for disabled people aims to help claimants to gain the skills necessary to find and maintain a job. It is available to those who claim a benefit related to their health and are actively seeking work. The claimant will choose a ‘job broker’ who will help them to find the most suitable job. Your job broker will help to ensure that you are better off in work than on benefit.

Income Support

Income support is available to those who do not work full time but are not considered ‘unemployed’. Generally income support claimants are lone parents, registered blind, carers, sick or disabled. Claimants will be aged 16-59, have a low income, work less than 16 hours a week and be without savings of over £16,000. It is also available to young people in full-time education who are lone parents, refugees learning English, do not live with a parent or parental figure, are sick or disabled or those who are at serious risk of abuse or violence. It can be claimed by those who are sleeping rough, living in a hostel or care home.

Incapacity Benefit

Incapacity benefit is available to those who are too sick or disabled to work. It is paid to those who are over 16 and under the State Pension age who have contributed enough National Insurance. ‘Incapacity’ means you are unable to work for more than 4 days in a row. If claimed for over 7 days, confirmation of incapacity will be needed from a doctor.

Employment and Support Allowance

Employment and Support Allowance replaces Incapacity benefit and Income support for new claimants who qualify because of an illness or disability. It is paid to those who are out of work or off work and do not qualify for Statuary Sick Pay. It is either contribution or income-based.
